I know over the last ten years, it has become more politically correct to say Happy Holidays. I think you all can understand that I'm not the most politically correct teacher out there. I will say Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah, Hannukah, etc), Happy Kwanza, or whatever else you might celebrate, just let me know what.
This leads me into this new post. Why do we celebrate Christmas at this time? Chanukah is celebrated at this time because through the Jewish Calendar, this is when it supposed to be celebrated. But what about Christmas?
Check out this site, about four paragraphs down and get some information. Also check out this video. Now comes a few questions.
1. What do you think is the real reason why we celebrate Christmas in December?
2. A little review from 7th grade history. How do you think the size of the Roman Empire helped the spread of Christianity?

Hi,
1)Christmas is celebrated on the 25th because it was a day of celebration for two other events as well. Also it was a date that was already celebrated for other parallel events.
2)I think it affected the spread of Christianity because of the empire's size. It was so big and this religion was the chosen one that Christianity was spread quickly.
1. we celebrate christms on the25 because of one is that The savoir was born in other terms Jesus Christ
the mircale of the Son of God born in flesh of a human
also we get presents because gifts was brought to him so we do the same. we give presents and we recive
2.It affected the spread of christian faith thought the empire because the size of it .
1)I have no clue why we celebrate it that day and i know justin said jesus was born that day it clearly reads in the bible that he was born another month
2)Didnt the roman empire kill all christians in the collusium until they would admit to the roman religion????
Well, you're correct about them torturing the Christians, but think about the question some. Besides the fact that the Roman empire being big, what about the size makes it helpful? Think of the alternative, if there were different, smaller empires instead of the large Roman empire.
Coach,
As for #1 The reason we celebrate Christmas on the 25th is because of other events that occurred that same day, the birth of one Roman god and the other a birth of an Iranian god. When the winter solstice arrived a few days earlier the church leaders decided upon this date, thus forth rendering a new celebration, known today as Christmas.
For #2 on the other hand, the size of the Roman empire influenced the spread of Christianity because the more people there are to follow this religion, the more people there are to spread it to whomever they meet in there travels.
Merry Christmas! and a Happy New Year!

(Adam Gonser P.2) we celebrate Christmas in December because there were so many other holidays of other religions that we picked a day for Christians, (it would be easier for them to keep faith if they had a holiday amongst other religions) and it affected the spread of Christianity because Rome was the known world at that time, so if Jesus was born elsewhere only believers at that time would have known about it. And sure, they would have told people, but not a lot of people would have believed them because that wasn't part of the world to them!
It's Nik H. from P2. 1st of all Happy holidays to everyone.
1)We celebrate Christmas in December because in December there is the day in which Jesus Christ was born, who is the son of god, according to the catholic and christian religions. So it is a very important date to most of the population of the Earth. Also it coencides with a few other holidays.
2)I believe that the Roman Empire size was great effect in the spread of Christianity, because at the time the Romans punshied and executed those who were Christian. So as human nature dictates people rebeled, and practiced christianity anyways. This is at least what have come to believe coach.
Hey Mr. Walter!
1)Christmas is celebrated because of 3 religions: The Sun God of ancient Rome and the festival of Jupiter, and since the Bible doesn't mention the birth of Jesus, the Romans adopted the birth date of Mythra in Pagan religion(I think that's how it's spelled...), which was Dec 25.
2)The size of Rome helped Christianity spread with it's size by being closer to many other countries or kingdoms, such as the Middle East, obtain the religion. Since Rome was a giant trading place, they helped go to the hard to reach places, like China and Western Africa. Oh, by the way Bandgeek, the reason why Christianity survived is because of the dude called Martin Luther who nailed the 95 Theses on the church wall. That inspired people to read the Bible more and THEN Christianity spread.
Hey,
1. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th for multiple reasons. On this day an Iranian god was born as well as a Roman god, natalis solis invicti.A few days earlier is the celebration of the solstice. The church leaders saw this day as worshiping other gods and wanted to introduce a new celebration, Christmas.
2. The size of the Roman Empire affected the spread of Chritianity greatly. The religion spread quickly but this only happened because the Empire was united. If there had been divided groups there would have been a difference of opinion. The groups would have believed in different things creating rivalry. THe fact that there had been one nation allowed the religion to become popular and become the chosen religion.
Hey its rachel from second period. just forgot to put my name on my comment. My username is Smarty
Score one for the last post! The size helped in unification of the area. With different countries controlling the European continent at the time, how could that have affected the spread of Christianity? Think of transportation . . .
